My hands are shaking with anger as I type this.  A sick, cowardly, and racist website (hereafter referred to in insult-laced bold type) that trashes the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr is outranking the official Martin Luther King Jr website on Google. I will not provide a link to the racist site, as I will not directly contribute a single visit to them.  However, I will show exactly how the official Martin Luther King website (found at http://www.thekingcenter.org)  got beaten in the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) battle.  My dream to improve The King Center‘s SEO and Google Rank may not be as lofty and inspirational as Martin Luther King Jr’s, but I do have a dream.

Now, let’s get to work.

(Disclaimer: This article is specifically crafted to give maximum SEO benefit to The King Center’s website and the memory of Martin Luther King Jr.)

First, let me identify the racist organization. They are at martinlutherking DOT org, and no, I won’t embed the direct link.  If I were to do so, I would be improving their Google ranking.  This disgusting pile of HTML-based hatred is part of a white nationalist group called Storm-bunch of pansies-Front (take out the hyphenated part to get their actual name, as I don’t even want the actual name of their group on my website).

How did this wart on the butt of society manage to get their website ranked higher than the official Martin Luther King Jr site, you ask? Never assume that racists are stupid. Anybody has the potential to be clever, regardless of how disgusting their beliefs may be.  It turns out that the racist site is well optimized and The King Center is not. The fact that the racists are winning in the SEO battle is not that they are doing awesome SEO (quite mediocre, in fact), but that The King Center is doing no SEO.

Here is where The King Center website is failing at basic SEO:

• The official Martin Luther King Jr website has no site meta description.
• The site description code for the official Martin Luther King Jr website that Google can see doesn’t even contain the phrase Martin Luther King Jr; it only contains the word King.
• The official Martin Luther King Jr website has no keywords (a HUGE mistake that is easy to fix)
• The official Martin Luther King Jr website has no H1 tags (a coding feature that tells Google the main topics of a site/page)
• The official Martin Luther King Jr website has no H2 or  H3 tagged content.
• The official Martin Luther King Jr website has only one H4 tag, but this is for a Flash-module (Google can’t see Flash, by the way)
• The official Martin Luther King Jr website homepage is Flash, and Google cannot penetrate Flash.  Furthermore, the page title for the official Martin Luther King Jr website homepage is actually Untitled Document.  The Toad suggests that they remove the Flash intro page completely, as having it there is an SEO disaster.  Trust me.
• The official Martin Luther King Jr website has no XML sitemap, and Google hates this.

There are literally dozens of other critical SEO mistakes that can be easily fixed. This is not to criticize the official Martin Luther King Jr website or their web developer. Virtually all of the websites that Click the Toad analyzes are lacking in SEO; SEO is something that most people know nothing about.  It just so happens that in this case, a racist group determined to demonize Martin Luther King Jr happens to have some basic SEO built into their site.

I did find many, many SEO mistakes on The Racist Pansies website, but I’ll keep those to myself.  They’ll need to find a racist SEO expert to help them.
